About

There are four martyrs' graves in the village of Çakaltepe, in the Menderes district of Izmir. Martyrs' graves are surrounded with a wall made of rock for protection. The tombstones are inscribed in Old Turkish.

According to information obtained by visitors to these graves from Hasan Çakır, a Cyprus veteran they met, as the Greeks retreated in 1922, a village priest's daughter fired a bullet at the Greeks, attracting their attention to the village. Fourteen people were martyred while fleeing the Greek persecution. Later, as the Greeks were about to burn the village, a French soldier informed the Greeks that the Turkish army was approaching, and the Greeks began to flee.
