Guzelbahce Martyrs' Monument
About
The Origin of the Name Kahramandere: The name of the Kahramandere neighborhood in the Güzelbahçe district is associated with the resistance movements that took place in the region during the War of Independence. The Güzelbahçe-Kilizman line is one of the areas where Turkish militias fought heroically during the occupation years. Therefore, after the war, the area surrounding a stream in the region became known as "Kahramandere," and over time, the neighborhood became known by this name. The name conveys both a geographical feature (the stream) and the heroic memory of the local people.
It was commissioned in 1931 by İzmir Governor Kazım Dirik in memory of the soldiers who fell in the Kahramandere area of Güzelbahçe during the liberation of İzmir. It is located on a side street of the Güzelbahçe Municipality. The inscription placed at the base of the monument reads: It is written: “IT WAS BUILT BY IZMIR GOVERNOR KAZIM DIRIK PASHA IN MEMORY OF THE MARTYRS WHO FALLEN IN GUZELBAHÇE KAHRAMANDERE LOCATION DURING THE LIBERATION OF IZMIR.”
